Free Condoms for DC
The District of Columbia Department of Health HIV/AIDS Administration is improving its free condom distribution program by making it easier for community partners and business establishments to receive condoms and lubricant packages. Condoms and lubricant packages will be shipped directly to community partners and businesses.
HIV is a preventable disease, and condoms used correctly can prevent transmission of the virus. Laboratory studies show that condoms are 95 percent effective in reducing the risk of HIV infection. Condoms are also effective in preventing pregnancies and the transmission of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and Hepatitis.
Starting October 24, 2008, the Department of Health will ship condoms and lubricant packages directly to community partners. The Department provides Durex Enhanced Pleasure (regular size) and Durex Maximum condoms (large size) and lubricant units. Condoms and lubricants must be ordered in quantities of 1,000. The condoms will be shipped within 10 days of the order. The Department encourages community partners to place orders for regular shipment on either a monthly basis or every three months.
The Department recommends that partners plan their orders sufficiently to cover a monthly or quarterly restocking schedule. As community partners expand their distribution, amounts ordered may be increased. Community partners recruiting non-public health locations in their neighborhoods are encouraged to develop ongoing supportive relationships with those sites and support them to place orders directly with the Department.
The Department of Health encourages all its community partners to expand the availability and accessibility of condoms in their neighborhoods and among their target populations by distributing them to non-public health locations, such as bars, clubs, restaurants, Laundromats, convenience stores, liquor stores and other venues.
